How Salary Tax Calculator works
The July 2026 salary schedule exempts the first 10,000 AFN per month, then taxes the 10,000–100,000 band at 10% and excess over 100,000 at 15%. The historical schedule begins at 5,000 AFN with a 2% middle tier.
A monthly salary calculation is not an annual self-assessment. Verify wage inclusion, payroll withholding duties and the relevant assessment status.
Practical tax guidance and worked considerations
Estimate monthly withholding and net salary
Enter the gross monthly taxable pay in AFN and choose the schedule for the income period. Under the revised 2026 individual income rules, the annual exemption threshold increased to 120,000 AFN, the equivalent of 10,000 AFN per month when applied evenly. The tool distinguishes tax withheld from net pay; salary paid after tax should not be entered as gross income without selecting the appropriate reverse calculation.
Illustrative payroll calculation
If qualifying monthly taxable salary is 30,000 AFN under the calculator's revised monthly progressive schedule, the first 10,000 AFN is exempt and 20,000 AFN falls within the 10% band, producing an illustrative 2,000 AFN withholding estimate before any taxpayer-specific adjustments. This is a calculation example, not an official determination of payroll liability. Confirm which remuneration components must be included.
Payroll records and authoritative rules
Keep the monthly payslip, gross-to-net breakdown and income period alongside any exported estimate. An annual individual tax calculation is not necessarily identical to payroll withholding or an employer's reporting obligation. The Ministry of Finance wage-withholding guide and the July 2026 government announcement provide reference material; verify applicability with the tax office.

Frequently asked questions
What are the 2026 monthly salary bands?
Up to 10,000 AFN is exempt, the next slice to 100,000 AFN is taxed at 10%, and the remainder at 15%.
What changed from older payroll brackets?
Previously 5,000 AFN was exempt, then a 2% bracket applied to 12,500 AFN before higher bands.
What is the estimate on 45,000 AFN monthly pay?
The revised schedule yields 3,500 AFN and the older schedule yields 3,400 AFN.
Can I calculate net pay?
Yes. Enter gross monthly salary and view tax and take-home pay.
Can I calculate the gross salary for a net target?
Yes. Use the net-to-gross control.
Does this calculator complete a payroll return?
No. It provides a calculation estimate only.
What is the estimated salary withholding on 25,000 AFN under the 2026 brackets?
A monthly gross salary of 25,000 AFN produces an estimated 1,500 AFN withholding, leaving 23,500 AFN after the modeled tax.
How is the 2026 bracket over 100,000 AFN calculated?
The estimate adds 9,000 AFN to 15% of the salary amount above 100,000 AFN.
What is the historical 100,000 AFN bracket base?
The older schedule reaches 8,900 AFN at a gross monthly salary of 100,000 AFN, with a further 20% marginal tax above it.
Does the 2026 reform guarantee lower tax for everyone?
No. Removing the old 2% slice can produce slightly higher liability for some midrange monthly salaries even though the top marginal rate fell.
Does withholding use the whole salary or only one month's basic pay?
The tax base can include cash and non-cash employment compensation, including some allowances. Confirm which benefits are taxable under the applicable law.
When does the salary withholding payment generally become due?
Published guidance commonly refers to 10 days after the end of the Solar Hijri month in which wages were paid.
Does a bonus change withholding?
A taxable bonus or allowance can increase the relevant wage amount. The model does not automatically classify individual benefit types.
Can I use the tool for a prior payroll month?
Yes, by selecting the applicable historical or reform rule version after checking the actual filing and assessment circumstances.
Are taxes already withheld from salary deducted twice?
No. This module estimates withholding for a gross salary; it does not reconcile previously paid tax credits.
Does the calculator round to whole afghanis?
The visible results are displayed to two decimal places in AFN; actual payroll rounding should follow the employer's verified reporting requirements.
Does salary tax apply to nonresident employees?
Afghan-source employment income can have withholding implications for residents and nonresidents; specific status requires legal review.
Can an employer pay an employee's tax on their behalf?
Employer-paid tax can itself be treated as additional compensation under some published wage-withholding guidance and needs a gross-up assessment.
Why do I need to choose an older or newer tax schedule?
The July 2026 transition rules may depend on the filing or assessment's finalization rather than solely when wages were earned.
Does the calculator determine whether my employer must withhold?
No. It estimates the amount only. Employer registration, employee count and other statutory conditions need independent checking.
