How Business Receipts Tax (BRT) Calculator works

Published BRT sources are not fully consistent across dates, industry classifications and taxpayer types. Some Ministry of Finance guides refer to 2% for eligible activities; other summaries include 4% general receipts, 5% for certain hospitality activities and 10% for selected premium hospitality or telecommunications. The tool requires an explicit rate selection and does not silently assume which rate governs your business.

Tax calculation assumptions

BRT and corporate income tax can both apply. Check industry classification, exemptions and the definition of taxable receipts.

Practical tax guidance and worked considerations

Distinguish taxable receipts from business profit

Business Receipts Tax is generally concerned with taxable receipts in the relevant reporting period, not a company's profit after expenses. Enter gross receipts according to the applicable definition, then choose the appropriate rate category. The rate cannot be determined reliably from the amount alone; industry and business classification are important.

Use sector-specific rates cautiously

Published Afghan tax material describes different rates for different periods and activities. Guidance has referred to a general receipts regime and special treatment for some hospitality, telecom and other services. The tool deliberately allows explicit rate selection instead of silently assuming that one percentage applies to every enterprise. Check the official position for your industry before invoicing or filing.

Record the basis of a quarterly estimate

Keep the taxable receipts ledger, the quarter covered, adjustments and the selected rate with the exported calculation. For questions about eligibility, exclusions and filing duties, consult the Ministry of Finance Business Receipts Tax guide. BRT is not automatically a substitute for corporate income tax or contractual withholding.

Frequently asked questions

What is BRT?

Business Receipts Tax is normally calculated against qualifying business receipts, not business profit.

Which BRT rates are available?

The calculator offers 2%, 4%, 5% and 10% source-referenced rate options; taxpayers must verify the rate applicable to their activity and tax period.

Which sectors can require special BRT rates?

Published references identify differing rates for some hotel, restaurant, event-hall, airline, telecommunications and superior-service activities, with concessions for eligible activities.

Is BRT replaced by corporate income tax?

No. Both can be relevant to a taxable business.

What period is entered?

Enter taxable gross receipts for the relevant quarter.

Can expenses be deducted from BRT?

The model does not reduce taxable receipts by general operating expenses.

Why is the BRT rate not automatically selected?

Published reference rates vary across sectors, taxpayer classifications and policy periods, so an automatic universal rate could mislead users.

What does gross taxable receipts mean?

It generally starts with qualifying business receipts rather than profit after salaries, rent or cost of goods sold.

Which published BRT options does the tool provide?

Options include 2%, 4%, 5% and 10% source-derived categories. The legal applicability of each rate must be checked.

What happens if I do not select a BRT category?

The calculator does not silently assign a rate and prompts you to choose the appropriate published profile.

Is the BRT base calculated monthly or quarterly?

The interface expects taxable gross receipts for the applicable quarter.

Is BRT the same as corporate income tax?

No. BRT is receipt-based, while the corporate income tax model uses taxable annual profit.

Can a hotel have a different BRT rate from a wholesaler?

Yes. Certain hospitality operations have special categories and published concessions that may change their rate.

Can telecommunications businesses have a separate BRT category?

Yes. Public tax summaries identify telecommunications among sectors with differentiated rates.

Are cancelled sales included in receipts?

The recognition of refunds and cancelled transactions depends on the applicable accounting and tax rules. This tool does not determine adjustments.

Do amounts owed but not paid count as receipts?

This depends on the statutory meaning of receipts and the taxpayer's accounting basis; verify the relevant guidance.

Can BRT exemptions apply to a business?

Yes. Exemptions or incentives may apply based on industry, project or taxpayer eligibility, and must be separately verified.

What are common payment deadlines for BRT?

Older published summaries commonly refer to 15 days after the end of the relevant Solar Hijri quarter; verify current instructions.

What if my business uses several activity categories?

Separate taxable receipts and any applicable rates as required; one combined percentage may not accurately describe different activities.

Does the calculator issue an official BRT return?

No. The result is an estimate with a CSV summary; official forms and submissions remain the taxpayer's responsibility.
